5 Easy Ways to Prevent Kidney Disease


The kidneys are a pair of organs located within the abdomen.

The kidney’s main function is to excrete waste substances and excess water from the body in the urine.

The kidneys perform many other important functions.


Kidney disease is considered to occurs when there is a medical disorders affecting the kidney.

There are many conditions in which the kidneys can fail to perform its functions.

When irreversible failure occurs and dialysis is required the patient is managed by a nephrologist.

Common Symptoms indicating Kidney Problems


Increased weakness.

High blood pressure.

Back pain below the ribs.

Burning sensation while urinating.

Change in pattern of urination including increased frequency of urination and having to get up more often at night to pass urine.

Puffiness around the eyes, particularly in the morning.

Swelling of the face and feet and sometimes of the whole body (Edema) !Important sign of kidney disease.

Note: these symptoms of kidney disease however may be absent. Patients may lose a great deal of their kidney function without any of these symptoms appearing. When the kidneys are damaged, the amount of urine that is passed may not decrease until the amount of damage is extremely severe and perhaps only 15% of the normal kidney function remains. It must be emphasized that early referral to a nephrologist for medical check up is necessary to correctly diagnose and avert the disorder.

To live a successful life, you must take good care of your health.


Preventing Kidney Disease


Drink more water to keep your kidneys hydrated enough to properly perform their functions well.

Avoid too much salt.

Avoid acid reflux drugs. Popular acid reflux drugs are linked to kidney disease risk

Reduce proteins in your diet. Most of the waste products excreted by the kidney come from the protein in the diet.

However, it must be remembered that body uses protein to build, maintain, and repair body tissues. It is therefore very essential to maintain sufficient protein intake.

Don't store or delay urine in your bladder for too long. A full bladder can cause bladder demage.

Storing urine in the bladder stresses the kidney.

Finally, nephrologist are trained to identify and treat medical disorders that affect the kidney. So, it will be in your best interest to seek medical advice from a nephrologist.
